These portraits explore how ordinary women, from New York City artists and rabble-rousers to Maine naturalists, guides, and mill workers, remain relevant today. Some found liberation in the city, some in rugged landscapes. Others were constrained or betrayed by the very places that promised freedom. Several moved between worlds, carrying the imprint of place with them into new lives.

Each silk portrait contains a historical map relevant to the woman's identity and connection to place. The maps show how geography shaped these women's opportunities, identities, and sense of purpose. The women featured here reflect an enduring spirit of independence, resourcefulness, and grit. Yet their relationships with place tell different stories. Some women thrived through their connection to landscape. They were at home and in close-knit communities. But others faced systemic barriers like poverty, racism, and gender discrimination, which limited the lives they could build."
